The BJP on Tuesday named Draupadi Murmu, a tribal leader of the party from Odisha, as a candidate in the July 18 presidential election. The decision on the name was made during the party’s parliamentary board meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Murmu, 64, a former governor of Jharkhand, will be the first tribal woman to hold the highest constitutional position if elected, a big possibility as numbers pile up in favor of the BJP-led NDA.
